Agri MBA programme for fisheries sector

Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) has announced the launch of a full-fledged management course for fisheries. The university is launching the MBA - fisheries enterprises management in fisheries for the first time in the country.

With campuses in Chennai, Tuticorin and Nagapattinam, TNFU is a state-funded institution teaching fisheries, research and training offering BSc, MSc and Ph D courses in fisheries science and B Tech in biotechnology to enhance fish production and utilisation.

With the intention of offering management degree, the university has established TNFU - Business School and the university has completed the construction of the facility at Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) in Chennai with Rs 10 crore grant from Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).

It will be a full time course from this academic year through self-financing mode, said vice-chancellor of TNFU, S Felix.

"When compared to agriculture and dairy, fisheries sector grows by a handsome figure of seven per cent. We produce technical people to handle the sector but management part of the fisheries enterprises still managed by people from outside fisheries studies. To bridge this gap, we have come out with this new MBA programme which is a first-of-its-kind in fisheries sector in the country," he said.

According to university sources, the programme is loaded with job opportunities in aqua farming, hatchery, aqua clinics, aqua shops, fish feed manufacturing, seafood processing and export, seafood restaurant and eateries, organised seafood retailing, ornamental fish culture, fishing gear and craft manufacturing units, deep sea fishing sector, commercial fisheries undertaking of government and laboratory services towards fisheries.
